Blue Parakeet Rugs Sparkle in Restored Pasadena Craftsman

Exciting news for all our fellow California Craftsman lovers out there in the latest from Architectural Digest as Morgan Goldberg interviews “the Craftsman whisperer” and star designer Jamie Haller.

With excellent photography by Jenna Peffley, the piece tells the story behind Haller’s historically expert redesign of a 1913 Craftsman in Pasadena. Luckily, the homeowners were motivated to keep the structural elements that give the home so much visual interest, like pocket doors and beautiful old moldings throughout, so Haller was able to add colors and textures true to the original era of the home.

Key to creating the aesthetic was finding a rug for each color-saturated space. Haller says, “We tried a few different rugs in each space… You wait for the one that really feels like it belongs in the room. Usually it’s the emotional hit.” It’s the key for all us in finding the right rug — no matter how perfect the rug, it must also belong in the space you intend for it. This fact inspired us to start our beloved Rug ‘N’ Roll program years ago, to help our customers try out rugs in their homes.

The reward for such attention to detail in a space is, as homeowner Helena notes, picture-perfect “sight lines.” The textiles, woods, and architectural features all hold space without feeling outdated or heavy, and each nook and corner feels like a family heirloom.

We love the projects that embrace color and pattern as much as our beloved vintage rug weavers did when this 1913 home was brand new, and you will too after touring the redesign over at Architectural Digest.
